Información general
Presentación
  • I am full Professor of the Biodiversity and Conservation Unit of King Juan Carlos University
(URJC). My research lines are focused on plant conservation biology, using ecological and
genetic approaches, having worked both with narrowly distributed endemics, alpine plants
threatened by climate change and crop wild relatives. In the last decade I have studied the
population dynamics and local adaptation processes of alpine plants and their responses to
climate change, assessing how well-adapted marginal populations are. Presently, my research
is focused on the evolutionary potential of flowering phenology, a key aspect with traits of
enormous relevance in the context of global warming.
I have a positive evaluation of four six-year research periods granted by CNEAI. Throughout
27 years of research activity I have published 88 research articles in journals with impact factor
(JCR) and a total of 176 articles in scientific journals, books and book chapters and 46 articles of
scientific dissemination. I have participated in 42 research projects as principal investigator andin a total of 81 funded research projects. In this context, I have been principal investigator of four
projects of the Spanish National Plan for RD&I and I have led my research group as a partner
in research projects from the 5th, 6th, 7th Framework Programs of the European Union, the
H2020 program and the AGRIGENRES program of the European Commission, assuming key
responsibilites as workpackage leader. At the European scale I have also participated in three
projects of the LIFE programme. Finally, I have been principal investigator in research projects
funded by Autonomous Communities of Spain and private companies. I have supervised 8
doctoral theses and I am currently supervising three more.
I have been a member of the Editorial Committee of the journals "Biological
Conservation" (2003-2013) and "Anales del Jardín Botánico de Madrid (2003-2006) and I have
participated as a regular reviewer in Acta Oecologica, American Journal of Botany, Annals of
Botany, Conservation Biology, Ecography, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Journal of Ecology,
Molecular Ecology, New Phytologist, Oecologia, Oikos, Perspectives in Plant Ecology, among
    others.

Méritos
  • I have large experience in management, having been Head of the Department of Plant Biology
in the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), Director of the Master on Characterization
Tecniques and Conservation of Biological Diversity of URJC, Director of the Doctoral Program
in Biotechnology and Genetic Resources of Plants and Associated Microorganisms of UPM,
Director of the Doctoral Program on Conservation of Natural Resources of URJC and Director
of the International Doctoral School of URJC. I have participated in the organization of over 30
R&D activitities (congresses, symposia, etc.) at the national and international levels.
At the International level I have been Secretary General of OPTIMA (Organization for the
Phyto-Taxonomic Investigation of the Mediterranean Area). Presently I am Secretary of the
Commision on Plant Resources of OPTIMA, member of the Species Survival Commission,
Re-introduction Specialist Group and Mediterranean Island Plants Specialist Group of IUCN
(International Union for Conservation of Nature). I am also member of the Coordinating Group of
the In situ and On-farm Conservation Network and the Documentation and Information Network
of ECP/GR (European Cooperative Programme for Crop Genetic Resources Networks).
