  • My scientific career is mainly focused on systematics, taxonomyphylogeny and conservation of fungi. Vocationally interested in fungi, I am devoted to study many groups of fungi, often in close collaboration with amateur mycologists, and I have acquired excellent skills in morphological species recognition and field ecology of fungi. Considering the present biodiversity loss, the final goal of all those studies is to improve insights on fungi and to obtain a better picture of the huge diversity of fungi.

In combination with those skills, through two postdoctoral positions (Swedish Natural History Museum, University of Alcalá) I  acquired expertise in molecular techniques. Besides conducing molecular laboratory work for a number of projects, I have routinely analyzed nucleotide-sequence data for phylogenetic analyses, and I have also attended courses on phylogenetics and genomics. Through these postdoctoral positions, I have published taxonomic revisions based on multigene phylogenetic analyses in Q1 journals of the Mycology area, including studies of edible and commercialized fungi (Cantharellus). During this postdoctoral period I built a rich network of collaborations thanks to my skills as a fungal taxonomist and molecular biologist.

A outstanding fact of my background is that I have been the main researcher of four projects and that I count on experience leading research projects. During the first two projects I coordinated a group of four researchers aiming to elucidate species and generic limits in Typhula and related genera (Basidiomycota), among which phytopathogenic species of economical importance exist. The two projects had scientifically relevant results, as 25 new species to science (not published yet) were discovered and a broad multigene phylogeny has been recently published in Studies of Mycology. The last two projects deal with phylogenomics in Cantharellales, and targets economically or ecologically important genera, such as Cantharellus, Craterellus, Rhizoctonia or Clavulina.

Due to my unusually broad taxonomic scope of my publications,  I was appointed to participate in the global fungal red-listing initiative being coordinated internationally, and I have participate in several conservation state assessments of fungi included in the IUCN. I have also close contact with popular mycology and amateur mycologists as I am one of the principal promoters of the Iberian Mycological Society (SIM), which I preside, as well as coordinator of the mycology section of the Aranzadi Society of Sciences. I am author on 59 ISI-rated papers (16 Q1), more than 30 publications in other non-indexed journals, and described 27 species to science up to date.
