Presentación

  • Catedrático de Ciencia Política en la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos de Madrid, así como director del Máster en Análisis y Prevención del Terrorismo que se imparte en esta misma Universidad.

    Ha sido miembro del Editorial Board del Centro de Excelencia sobre Radicalización de la Comisión Europea; miembro del Grupo de Expertos sobre Radicalización Violenta de la Comisión Europea; asesor del ministro del Interior del Gobierno de España, entre enero y julio de 2012; y profesor invitado del NATO Defense College de Roma, entre otras instituciones académicas.
    Es miembro del consejo editorial de revistas académicas internacionales como Terrorism and Political Violence; Studies in Conflict and Terrorism -ambas incluidas en el ranking internacional del Journal Citation Report (JCR)-, y Democracy and Security, así como evaluador de diversas publicaciones académicas de impacto.

    Entre 1994 y 2004 fue profesor (Lecturer) en el Departamento de Ciencia Política de la Universidad del Ulster, en Belfast, además de investigador (Research Fellow) del Institute of Irish Studies y del Institute of Governance, Public Policy and Social Research, ambos en la Queen's University of Belfast de la capital de Irlanda del Norte.

    Es autor, entre otras obras, de The IRA and Armed Struggle (Londres/Nueva York: Routledge, 2007); y Matar por Irlanda (Alianza editorial, 2003), libro basado en la más amplia muestra de entrevistas personales a miembros de la organización terrorista IRA. Su último libro es La derrota del vencedor. La política antiterrorista del final de ETA (Alianza editorial, 2018).

    Ha recibido varios premios internacionales por sus publicaciones sobre terrorismo y seguridad, entre ellos, la Montgomery Medal concedida en 1995 por The Queen's University of Belfast y la Irish Association por su análisis de la política antiterrorista del gobierno británico hacia Irlanda del Norte; el Premio al mejor artículo de revista académica en 2005 concedido por la Asociación Española de Ciencia Política (AECPA); y el IX Premio Internacional COVITE concedido en 2010 por el Colectivo de Víctimas del Terrorismo del País Vasco por su libro Vidas rotas. Historia de los hombres, mujeres y niños víctimas de ETA (Espasa).

    Ha sido investigador principal de proyectos internacionales sobre respuestas antiterroristas, víctimas del terrorismo, procesos de radicalización y terrorismo yihadista financiados por la Comisión Europea y el Departamento de Defensa de los Estados Unidos, entre otras instituciones.
