  • My scientific career began at the Universidad de Salamanca where I obtained my doctorate, funded by a grant from the Gobierno Autónomo Vasco. Since then, I have worked at the Universidad de Salamanca as Ayudante L.R.U. (1993-1998), Profesor Asociado (full time, 1998-2003) and Profesor Ayudante Doctor (2003), and subsequently at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos first as a Ramón y Cajal research fellow (2004-2006), then as Profesor Contratado Doctor (2006-2009), and since 2009 as Profesor Titular de Universidad. I began my research career working on various aspects of ordinary and partial differential equations, with a special emphasis on integrable systems. My thesis focused on the development of methods to detect integrability and their use to derive properties of integrable systems and also to establish connections between different types of symmetry methods.

I consider my research trajectory to have a clear international profile, as can be seen from my collaborations with researchers in for example Australia, the U.K., Turkey, China, India and Spain. In addition to a two-year postdoctoral position at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Kent at Canterbury (1996-97), funded by a postdoctoral grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture of Spain, I have regularly visited universities abroad. This includes visits (from two weeks to four months) to the University of Adelaide (1998), the University of Sydney (2002, 2005), the Université de Montpellier (2000), Bilkent University (2002, 2005), the University of Nottingham (almost yearly since 2010), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2019), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2019). Apart from my contract as a Ramón y Cajal fellow in Mathematics and my postdoctoral grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture of Spain, I was also successful in applications for postdoctoral grants from the Gobierno Autónomo Vasco and the Xunta de Galicia. In addition, the quality of my research has been recognised under the I3 programme. I have acted as a reviewer of research proposals for the National Science Foundation (USA), the Chilean National Commission for Science and Technology (Chile), the ANEP, CAM and the Programa Ramón y Cajal. Moreover, I have acted as an invited external evaluator with regard to staff promotion for Hong-Kong Baptist University and also as reviewer for theses for the Department of Nonlinear Dynamics at Bharathidasan University (India) and, over the last years, I have been an invited member of the Mathematics committee that awards the predoctoral and postdoctoral grants of the Gobierno Autónomo Vasco. I have given talks in many international conferences (several invited) and have given various seminars at universities in Spain and abroad. I have participated in more than 25 research projects, some of them as principal investigator. I have published some 80 papers in high-quality international research journals.

As for my research aims in the short/long term, these include to derive, understand and analyse from a unified point of view the properties and underlying structures (e.g. Lax pairs, Bäcklund transformations)  of a wide range of integrable systems, from the different variants of Painlevé equations (ordinary differential equations and discrete, differential-delay and matrix versions thereof) to partial differential equations, lattice systems, differential-differential-delay and matrix equations. Our recent work on matrix Painlevé hierarchies seems to be a very promising line of research. A further objective of my present and future research is to explore the implications of my understanding of the techniques developed within the context of integrable systems for methods usually employed outside of that context.
