Presentación

  • PRESENTATION. Jorge Fernández-Santos Ortiz-Iribas completed a B.Arch degree at Cornell AAP. After a long interruption, he resumed postgraduate studies at the universities of Cambridge and Leuven (KUL). Pre-doctoral research grants funded by the University of Cambridge and the AHRC (1999-2002) and a fellowship at the Real Academia de España (Rome, 2002-04) were key to the completion of a PhD degree in History and Philosophy conferred by the University of Cambridge in 2005. Thanks to funding provided by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung at Düsseldorf (2005-07) and Spain's Ministry of Economic Affairs and the ESF (2009-14) Fernández-Santos has conducted extensive postdoctoral research and training. Over the years archival research in Florence, Paris, Naples, Simancas (Valladolid) and Rome has benefitted from competitive travel grants and awards. 

    Initially focused on cultural transfer between the Italian and Iberian peninsulas in Early Modernity, his research has broadened to include late medieval Castile. He is a founding member of the research group ITEM. Recent books include: Ambassadors in Golden-Age Madrid: The Court of Philip IV through Foreign Eyes (co-ed. with José Luis Colomer, CEEH, 2020) and De señal y prerrogativa de nobleza: heráldica, honor y virtud, siglos XIV-XIX (co-ed. with José Antonio Guillén and Teresa Martialay, Sílex, 2022). Juan Caramuel y la probable arquitectura (CEEH, 2014) addresses the Cistercian polymath's architectural theory drawing from a wide survey of its medieval and early modern sources. Close attention is paid to its epistemological foundation and to the author's eventful life in Spain, Flanders, the Holy Roman Empire, Rome, Naples, and Milan.     

    PRESENTACIÓN. Tras completar el grado de arquitectura en la Universidad de Cornell, Jorge Fernández-Santos Ortiz-Iribas reanuda años después la actividad académica con estudios de máster en las universidades de Cambridge y Lovaina (KUL). Su tesis doctoral en Historia y Filosofía en la Universidad de Cambridge fue defendida en 2005. Ha realizado estancias de investigación pre-doctoral en la Real Academia de España y post-doctoral en la Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueología (CSIC), ambas en Roma. Su actividad investigadora ha recibido el apoyo y la financiación de la Universidad de Cambridge y el AHRC (1999-2002), de la Gerda Henkel Stiftung en Düsseldorf (2005-2007) y del Ministerio de Economía y el FSE (2009-2014), realizando asimismo estancias formativas más breves en Florencia, París, Nápoles y Roma, entre otros lugares.     

    Inicialmente enfocadas hacia los intercambios culturales entre las penínsulas italiana e ibérica en época alto moderna, sus investigaciones se han abierto hacia temáticas relativas al final de la Edad Media en Castilla, enmarcadas dentro de su pertenencia al grupo ITEM. Recientemente ha publicado (con José Luis Colomer, CEEH 2022) Ambassadors in Golden-Age Madrid:     The Court of Philip IV through Foreign Eyes y (con José Antonio Guillén y Teresa Martialay, Sílex 2022) De señal y prerrogativa de nobleza: heráldica, honor y virtud, siglos XIV-XIX. En Juan Caramuel y la probable arquitectura (CEEH, 2014) abordó la teoría arquitectónica del polígrafo cisterciense desde una consideración amplia de sus fuentes medievales y modernas con especial incidencia en su fundamentación epistemológica y la propia peripecia europea del autor madrileño
