I completed my Bachelor's degree in Biology (2012) at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, with honors (CGPA 3.66/4). I also minored in Environmental Microbiology in the Department of Environmental Engineering. Subsequently, I earned a Master's degree in Biology (2015) from the same university in the Limnology Laboratory, with honors (CGPA 3.93/4), specializing in freshwater ecology. Between 2013 and 2014, I worked as a research and teaching assistant at the same university. During my Master's, I conducted a 6-month research stay at the Lake Ecology Group, Aarhus University, Denmark, with ERASMUS funding. Later, I moved to Spain with a 3-year predoctoral grant to pursue a PhD in Aquatic Ecology (2018) at the University of Vic. During my PhD, I completed a 7-month research stay at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Biology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) in Berlin. From 2019-2022, I worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Évora, Portugal, in a multi-site experimental facility (IberianPonds) distributed across the Iberian Peninsula covering biogeographical gradients to explore the food web responses to gradients and climate change. Between 2022-2024, I worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Barcelona, to develop methods for assessing the ecological status of intermittent rivers in non-flowing phases (disconnected pools). In March 2025, I started working as a Principal Investigator funded by the program Atracción del Talento (2025-2030) of the Comunidad de Madrid. My research focuses on freshwater biodiversity and how climate change and multiple stressors (e.g., eutrophication, salinization, drought) influence the communities, functioning and conservation of freshwater ecosystems. I use various approaches (e.g., experiments, biomonitoring surveys, and data compilation) across climatic and environmental gradients. Specifically, my research is divided into 3 lines:1) biodiversity, community, and food web ecology, which explores community and food web responses along biogeographical, environmental, and anthropogenic gradients,2) experimental ecology, which helps to unravel complex community and food web responses to biotic and abiotic factors in controlled systems,3) applied ecology to study biological quality indices of important elements (i.e., zooplankton, invertebrates) of inland waters ranging from lentic (i.e., lakes, ponds) to lotic (i.e., intermittent rivers) to understand and develop effective conservation and management strategies. You can find more information on my personal website: https://zeynepersoy.com/
