Dr. Marcelo J. Karanik graduated in 1998 with a degree in Information Systems Engineering from the National Technological University, Resistencia Regional Faculty in Argentina. He obtained his PhD in Systems and Computer Engineering in 2012 from the University of Málaga in Spain. In 2017, he completed a six-month short-term postdoctoral position at the University of Málaga, part of the Andalucía Tech International Campus of Excellence in Spain. This program offered fellowships to attract young postdoctoral researchers, both international candidates and Spaniards living abroad, who had at least one year of postdoctoral experience outside of Spain. A total of six competitive fellowships were available, each lasting a minimum of four months and a maximum of six months. Also, he obtained a postdoctoral contract as part of the Requalification Program of the Spanish University System ¿specifically the ¿María Zambrano¿ modality¿ covering 2022 to 2024.
Since 2017, he has been a Category II Researcher II (National Incentive Program, Ministry of Education of Argentina) and Category B Researcher (National Technological University of Argentina). From 2017 to 2022, he was also Co-Director of the Center for Applied Research in Information and Communication Technologies (CInApTIC), belonging to the National Technological University (Argentina). Dr. Karanik has been the principal researcher of several projects evaluated and approved by the Ministry of Education of Argentina since 2011.
He co-authors several publications indexed in the Journal Citation Report and more than 30 publications, including national journals, international conferences and national scientific meetings. Since 2013, he has evaluated articles submitted to international journals and has participated in various national calls for proposals. He was also a member of the Science and Technology Advisory Council at the National Technological University of Argentina from 2018 to 2020.
Concerning the teaching activity, Dr. Karanik has been a Professor of Artificial Intelligence (National Technological University ¿ Resistencia Regional Faculty, Chaco, Argentina) from 2010 to 2022 and a Visiting Professor of Artificial Intelligence 1 and 2 (Gastón Dachary University, Posadas - Misiones, Argentina) from 2003 to 2023. He is accredited as a Profesor Contratado Doctor, Profesor de Universidad Privada and Profesor Ayudante Doctor (ANECA ¿ University Ministry - Spain) and currently is an Assistant Professor at Rey Juan Carlos University from 2022. He has also directed and co-directed several undergraduate and graduate theses.
Regarding management of university activities, Dr. Karanik has been Director of the Interuniversity Cooperation Network in TIC (ReCITIC), integrated by universities from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Colombia and Spain from 2013 to 2022 and supported by the Programa de Promoción de la Universidad Argentina (PPUA) ¿ Secretaria de Políticas Universitarias (SPU) del Ministerio de Educación de la República Argentina: Projects: Redes VI (2013), Redes VII (2014), Redes VIII (2015) and Redes IX (2016).
Since 2018, he has been an active member of the commission tasked with developing a PhD program in informatics, in partnership with the National Technological University, Northeast National University, and Misiones National University (Argentina). In 2023, he assumed the role of director for this program.
He is currently a member of the High-Performance Research Group at Rey Juan Carlos University, specifically within the "Artificial Intelligence Group" (GIA) of the Center for Intelligent Information Technologies and their Applications (CETINIA). In the GIA, Dr. Karanik has participated as researcher in the Value Awareness Engineering - VAE project (TED2021-131295B-C33 funded by MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033) and COordinated intelligent Services for Adaptive Smart AreaS - COSASS project (PID2021-123673OB-C32 funded by MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033). His current research interests focus on the application of artificial intelligence in decision-making processes and the modeling of human values through machine learning techniques.
